Swindon Seeks Hundreds of New Hosts for Ukrainian Refugees Amid Growing Demand

Urgent Call for Additional Hosts
Swindon Welcomes Ukrainians (SWU) reports a “huge” need for more volunteers to house people fleeing Russia’s invasion, which began four and a half years ago. Vice-chair Kris Talikowski says the demand from Ukrainians wanting to leave is as great now as it was at the war’s outset, and that about 50 more hosts are required. Only three individuals have expressed interest this week, including Eastcott-ward councillor Marina Strinkovsky, who views hosting as an opportunity for cultural exchange.
Current Support Landscape
Since 2022, the town has welcomed more than 500 Ukrainians through the Homes for Ukraine scheme. Recent figures from Swindon Borough Council show a total of 567 Ukrainians have been supported: 84 remain with hosts, 231 have moved into private rentals, and 252 have left Swindon. The council offers a “thank you” payment of £350 per month to eligible hosts, after Home Office security checks and a safeguarding process.
Community Events Strengthen Ties
Swindon is hosting one of Britain’s largest Ukrainian festivals, attracting over 4,000 attendees to the Town Gardens and Old Town. Maryna Shpylova, who arrived three years ago and now leads the Ukrainian Choir, describes the event as a celebration of unity for both Ukrainians and English residents. SWU chair Anastasiia Banatska notes that the festival also highlights the growing friendship between Swindon and Rivne, following a visit by Rivne Mayor Viktor Shakyrzian earlier in the year.
Hosting Process and Incentives
Prospective hosts must undergo Home Office security checks, a council-run safeguarding review, and a meeting with the prospective guest. The £350 monthly payment is intended to offset costs for those providing a minimum six-month sanctuary. SWU emphasizes that hosting should be voluntary, warning that refugees may feel pressured if assistance is imposed. The organization continues to pursue a formal twinning association with Rivne, aiming to deepen community bonds while addressing the pressing housing shortfall.
