Israel Defense Forces to Build Six New Brigade Training Bases

Scope and Objectives
The Israeli Defense Ministry announced a multi-year program to construct new training bases for the 7th, 188th, 401st, Kfir, Nahal and Givati brigades. A senior Defense Ministry official described the effort as an “operational initiative” aimed at modernizing the training environment for all IDF ground-force combat units and integrating lessons learned from the Oct 7 attacks. The plan calls for upgraded classrooms, advanced simulators and streamlined access for tanks and Namer armored personnel carriers.
Planned Locations and Construction Phases
Six sites are slated for development across the country. The 7th Brigade base in northern Israel, covering roughly 20,000 m², is already in advanced stages and is expected to begin receiving recruits in the late 2020s. A base for the 188th Brigade in the Jordan Valley is under construction and will be delivered in the late 2020s as well. The Kfir Brigade facility, also in the Jordan Valley, is in advanced stages with completion anticipated in the late 2020s. The Nahal Brigade base near Tel Arad remains in the planning stage, with construction to start within the next few months as part of a five-year rollout. Work on the 401st Brigade base adjacent to the Shivta artillery training site is scheduled to begin in the late 2020s. The Givati Brigade base, delayed for more than a decade, is still in planning and is projected for completion in the early 2030s.
Design Features and Soldier Amenities
Each base will cluster essential services—living quarters, dining halls, a synagogue and medical clinics—within a single complex to reduce travel time. Company-level housing will be two-story buildings equipped with kitchenettes, laundry facilities, fitness areas and 24/7 dining options. New tank maintenance centers will sit next to barracks, and bus routes will bring personnel close to training zones. Urban-warfare facilities for tanks, expanded physiotherapy clinics and extensive tank simulators will enable precise training even during extreme heat.

The senior official emphasized that the redesign addresses security gaps exposed on Oct 7, improving base resilience and rapid response capability. By consolidating infrastructure and integrating modern technology, commanders will gain greater flexibility in daily scheduling and operational planning, ultimately enhancing the IDF’s preparedness for future challenges.
