Suzuki Unveils First Kei-Class EV, the e SKY
Suzuki announced the prototype of its inaugural kei-class electric vehicle, the e SKY, positioning it as a compact EV with a claimed driving range of 310 kilometers—one of the longest among domestically produced kei EVs. The model was presented to the press in late October and is slated to enter domestic sales in November of the current fiscal year, with export versions adapted to European regulations also planned.
Design Priorities and Technical Specs
Suzuki emphasized that the e SKY was engineered to feel like a conventional gasoline car, targeting drivers who are new to electric mobility. Chief engineer Tomoyuki Tsubata explained that the development focused on minimizing every component’s weight and size, achieving a power consumption of 97 watt-hours per kilometer. The vehicle weighs 1,030 kg and measures 3,395 mm (length) × 1,475 mm (width) × 1,625 mm (height) with a 2,460 mm wheelbase and a 4.4 m turning radius. Interior features include a large display and a power outlet for added convenience. When the accelerator is pressed gently, the control system deliberately suppresses the sharp acceleration typical of EVs, delivering a gradual launch akin to a gasoline-powered car.
Market Position and Strategy
The e SKY mirrors the dimensions of Suzuki’s long-standing Alto, aiming at commuting and daily shopping trips. Suzuki, which previously lagged behind Nissan Motor and Mitsubishi Motors in the mini-EV segment, seeks to regain market share by promoting the model’s ease of use and affordable pricing. The company’s dealer network has launched a teaser campaign to raise awareness ahead of the autumn 2026 market debut.
