North Dakota Mother Charged After Fatal Attack on Her Children

On August 6, police responded to a 5:40 p.m. call at a residence on South Frontier Trail in Mandan, North Dakota. According to Mandan Police Chief Jason Ziegler, dispatch reports indicated that the mother had locked herself inside with three children and intended to kill them. Officers entered the home and found the three children with severe neck injuries. A 5-month-old child died that night, a 3-year-old child died the following day, and a 1-year-old child survived after surgery; family members later posted that the surviving child is expected to make a full physical recovery.

Court records show that Kailey Renae Erhart, 22, faces a total of eight criminal counts: two counts of murder, one count of attempted murder, three counts of aggravated assault, two counts of terrorizing with a dangerous weapon, and one misdemeanor count of domestic violence resulting in bodily injury. The probable-cause affidavit alleges that Erhart threatened the children’s father while armed with a handgun, told him “Say goodbye to your kids,” and later chased the father and grandmother from the house with a knife before locking them out, prompting the 911 call. Erhart has not entered a plea, and no mental-health or insanity defense has been presented publicly.

Judge Marina Spahr set Erhart’s bond at $3 million cash and ordered that she have no contact with the surviving child. The Morton County State’s Attorney’s Office has been contacted for comment but has not released a statement. Erhart remains in custody pending a preliminary hearing.
