Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL), the world’s largest electric-vehicle battery maker, announced a network of robot-run repair centers aimed at fixing damaged battery cells rather than replacing entire packs. The company says the hubs can return a vehicle to service in under 72 hours, with mobile service trucks capable of completing certain jobs in 48 hours. CATL projects the network will operate in 100 cities worldwide by the end of 2026.

Battery packs represent the most expensive component of an electric vehicle, often costing around $15,000 for a full replacement. Minor crashes can therefore become financially crippling if the only recourse is a total pack swap. Reuters reported that insurers in the United States and Europe have been totaling low-mileage EVs after relatively minor collisions when battery condition cannot be reliably assessed or repaired. Allianz data from Germany indicated that battery-related damage accounted for roughly 8 % of claim costs, underscoring the economic pressure on owners and insurers alike.
Scale and Capabilities
CATL disclosed that it already operates 1,376 franchise centers across 84 countries, supplemented by directly run sites in China, Norway, and Istanbul. Robots on the repair lines perform tasks such as painting and adhesive application without human contact. Mobile electric-repair trucks can run 30 diagnostic checks and execute 50 distinct on-site repairs, covering about 90 % of non-deep-repair cases.
Expected Impact on Ownership Costs
By repairing damaged cells at the component level, CATL estimates repair bills could drop from roughly $15,000 for a full pack replacement to about $1,480—approximately one-tenth the cost. Faster turnaround and lower expenses are expected to protect resale values and reduce the likelihood that minor battery issues force owners to write off their vehicles. The initiative aligns with long-standing demands from drivers and insurers for a scalable, cost-effective after-sales battery service network.
