Chinese J-16 Fighters Arrive in Egypt for First Africa Deployment

On August 21, a fleet of People’s Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force J-16 twin-seat multi-role fighters landed at an Egyptian airbase after a nine-hour, 6,000 km (3,730-mile) flight that required mid-air refuelling from YU-20 aerial tankers. The deployment also included YU-20 tankers, KJ-500 airborne early-warning aircraft and Z-20 helicopters, all prepared for joint training with the Egyptian Air Force as part of the “Eagles of Civilisation 2026” exercise.

The J-16, nicknamed the “Hidden Dragon,” normally patrols China’s east coast and contested areas such as the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait. It has previously participated in overseas drills with Russia and Pakistan, but this marks its first appearance in an African joint exercise. In the prior year, China deployed lighter J-10C fighters for its inaugural drill with Egypt, establishing a growing pattern of air-force cooperation in North Africa.

The Chinese defence ministry said the exercise will focus on air-combat tactics and air-superiority operations. Pilot Ning Yiming, participating in the drill, said the joint exercises provide a valuable platform for pilots to improve combat capabilities.

Analysts note that the deployment demonstrates China’s ability to project air power across long distances and to conduct coordinated operations with non-aligned partners. By integrating advanced fighters, tankers and early-warning assets, the drills aim to enhance both nations’ air-combat proficiency and signal Beijing’s expanding military engagement beyond its traditional regional sphere.
