Ron Moeller, the deputy assistant secretary of defense for strategic readiness and a senior aide to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, posted on X that he had submitted his formal resignation, effective in two weeks. He emphasized that he had intended to serve only a single year in the role, a promise he made when he accepted the position under President Donald Trump, Secretary Lloyd Austin, and the White House staff.

He began as an Air Force intelligence specialist in the 1970s, later joining the Central Intelligence Agency as a paramilitary operations officer. After multiple overseas assignments, he retired from the CIA in 2013. Within the Pentagon, Moeller reported to undersecretary Anthony Tata, who in turn reported to Steve Feinberg, the deputy to Secretary Hegseth.
