After Iranian students seized the U.S. Embassy in Tehran on 4 November 1979, holding 52 diplomats for 444 days, Washington adopted a cautious diplomatic posture that persisted through the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war and the 2025-26 Iran-Israel-U.S. confrontations. Learning from those setbacks, the State Department plans to redeploy staff to Baghdad, Riyadh, Kuwait and Lebanon in August 2026 to restore regional engagement.
