Japan Expands Reuse of Low-Radioactivity Fukushima Soil to Saitama and Sendai

Following the 2011 Fukushima Daiichi nuclear accident, decontamination work generated large volumes of low-radioactivity soil. Environment Minister Ishihara announced on August 25 that the government intends to reuse the low-radioactivity soil at joint government office complexes in Saitama and Sendai. These sites will be the first locations outside Tokyo where Fukushima decontamination soil is applied to new construction. The ministry frames the expansion as a step toward reducing the total volume of soil that ultimately requires permanent disposal.
