On April 28 last year, a massive power failure plunged Portugal and Spain into darkness for several hours. The outage halted production at the Spanish meat-processing firm Fribin in Binéfar, forcing the shutdown of refrigeration lines and the disposal of meat still in processing. In Portugal, the diesel generator at Primus Ceramics kept its roller kilns running, averting larger losses, while Vista Alegre’s porcelain plant suffered “irreparable losses” to continuous-production lines.
Industry Response: Accelerated Battery Investments
The blackout acted as a catalyst for a wave of battery-storage projects across the Iberian Peninsula. Fribin, whose annual electricity demand exceeds 25 GWh, purchased a five-megawatt-hour (MWh) battery module in June 2025 and ordered a second identical unit in early June 2026, investing roughly €1.5 million with partial funding from the EU’s Next Generation funds.
In Spain, total battery-storage capacity rose from about 28 MW before the outage to 193 MW by April 2026—a near-sevenfold increase, according to grid operator Red Eléctrica. The Spanish Institute for the Diversification and Saving of Energy (IDAE) awarded €827 million in EU funds to 133 energy-storage projects, targeting 2,400 MW of capacity, about 80 % of which will be battery-based.
Portugal’s Vista Alegre installed roughly 2 MWh of storage in 2022, while Primus Ceramics plans to more than double its battery capacity by the end of the year to capture solar generation from its factory.
