Pumpkin-Spice “Season Creep” Pushes Fall Flavors Into Summer

8/26/2026, 10:15:10 PM

Earlier Arrival of Fall Offerings

Coffee chains are launching their pumpkin-spice menus in late August, a full week before the traditional early-September rollout. This shift marks a noticeable acceleration of the seasonal rollout that retailers have been promoting in recent years.

Consumer Trends Driving the Shift

Instacart projects that the peak for pumpkin-spice grocery orders in 2024 will occur on September 17, ten days earlier than the 2023 peak. DoorDash reports that demand for pumpkin-spice items is surfacing in late July, and that overall interest is “brewing sooner than ever.” A National Retail Federation (NRF) survey shows that 49 % of shoppers in 2025 plan to begin Halloween purchases before October, up from 34 % a decade earlier. Younger shoppers, particularly those aged 18-24, cite intentional planning and a desire to avoid last-minute stress as primary motivations.

Expert Perspective on Seasonal Behavior

Michael Varnum, professor and head of social psychology at Arizona State University, explains that physiological responses to light and temperature, as well as culturally embedded rituals such as Halloween and back-to-school, shape how people perceive and act on seasonal cues. He notes that marketing efforts likely amplify “season creep” by seeking to capture holiday-related spending earlier in the year.

Marketing and Economic Implications

Retailers appear to be leveraging the earlier consumer enthusiasm to extend the sales window for fall-related products. Varnum suggests that this strategy aims to boost revenue by aligning holiday marketing with the anticipatory preferences of younger consumers. The trend also raises questions about the effectiveness of seasonal branding when the actual weather may not align with the promoted season.

Outlook

If the pattern continues, pumpkin-spice and other autumnal items may become a staple of summer retail calendars, further blurring traditional seasonal boundaries and reshaping consumer expectations for holiday shopping timelines.
