Ken Oliver, Veteran Racing Editor, Dies at 86

Ken Oliver, who passed away at the age of 86, served as the Guardian’s racing editor for many years before retiring in 2004. His journalism career spanned several prominent British publications, including the London Evening News, the Sporting Life, the Sun, the London Daily News, and the Sunday People, where he wrote under the pseudonym “Larry Lynx.” He also edited *Ruff’s Guide to the Turf*, the racing equivalent of *Wisden*.

Oliver began his newspaper work as a teaboy in his teens on the London Evening News, then rose through the ranks to become a leading authority on racing coverage. After retirement, he remained a regular racegoer, favouring West Country tracks such as Wincanton, and celebrated the 60th anniversary of his marriage to Sylvia only a few months before his death.
