Janmoni Konwar’s Gold Triumph Amid Assam Floods

National Karate Championship Victory
Seventeen-year-old Janmoni Konwar traveled from the flood-hit village of Bhogdoiporia Gaon in Jorhat district, Assam, to Delhi’s Talkatora Indoor Stadium and won the gold medal in the Ashihara category of the National Karate Championship held from 7 to 9 August, with the final competition occurring on August 9.
Flood Displacement and Family Sacrifices
On July 19, floodwaters breached an embankment about 150 metres from the Konwar home, washing away the house, damaging the family’s fishery, and forcing the family to seek shelter in a relief camp. To fund Janmoni’s training and competition expenses, the family had previously sold two buffaloes and relied on income from the fishery, both of which were disrupted by the flood.
External Support that Enabled the Journey
Alakh Pandey, founder of the online tutoring platform Physics Wallah, learned of Janmoni’s situation during a visit to flood-affected areas and provided Rs 3 lakh to cover travel, accommodation, and other costs for the Delhi competition. Union Minister of State for External Affairs Pabitra Margherita contributed an additional Rs 10,000 to the family’s finances, helping secure the journey to and from the capital.
Training Challenges and Community Impact
Coach Susanta Das notes that athletes from remote Assam often struggle to afford three meals a day, making proper nutrition and specialized diets difficult. Despite limited facilities—training on streets, in non-air-conditioned spaces, and without dedicated equipment—Janmoni’s consistency earned her a bronze medal in 2023 and gold in 2025. She now teaches younger children, most of them girls, inspiring them by showing that a teenager from a modest village can compete nationally and succeed.
Future Prospects
Following her gold medal, Janmoni is set to join the Sports Authority of India (SAI), which could provide structured coaching and resources for higher-level competitions. Her story illustrates how personal determination, community support, and targeted assistance can enable athletes from disaster-stricken areas to achieve national recognition and become role models for the next generation.
