History

Historical Context

In July-August 2006 Israel’s air strikes ignited forest fires that burned about 1,000 hectares and, after hitting the Jiyeh plant on 10 August, spilled up to 15,000 tonnes of oil. UNIFIL reported 150,000 displaced people and $1.5 billion in agricultural losses, leading the UN to pass Resolution 1701 on 11 August. Today’s raids on farms near Tyre lead President Joseph Aoun and Minister Hussein Fakih to denounce ecocide and call for more UNIFIL presence.
