Solidarity Letters Delivered
In a private gathering at El Espacio 23 in Miami, more than 27,000 letters of solidarity were handed to Cuban artist and activist Luis Manuel Otero Alcántara. The event, organized by Amnesty International and the cultural venue, brought together members of the Cuban artistic, activist and human-rights community to publicly display the breadth of international support for Otero Alcántara.
Background: Imprisonment and Exile
Otero Alcántara, known for using art to defend freedom of expression in Cuba, was designated a prisoner of conscience by Amnesty International. He was arbitrarily detained in July 2021 and sentenced in June 2022 to five years in prison. After serving nearly five years, he was released in July 2026 and forced into exile, now residing in Miami where he continues his work.

Verbatim Quote
“Bringing Luis Manuel and these thousands of letters together at El Espacio 23 is a reminder of what happens when a community refuses to let an artist’s voice disappear. Miami has always been a place where artists, ideas and people from across Latin America come together,” — Jorge M
Ongoing Advocacy
Amnesty International affirmed that the delivery of the letters marks a powerful moment but stressed that the work is not finished. The organization will continue urging the Cuban government to end the repression and criminalization of artists, activists, journalists and others who peacefully express dissenting views.
