Nordic Leaders Explore a Single Regional Stock Exchange

8/27/2026, 10:07:50 PM

The Proposal for a Unified Nordic Market

Industry alliance Nordic Compass is studying the consolidation of Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Finland’s national stock exchanges into one regional bourse. The alliance, launched in May, brings together more than 25 companies, foundations and organisations—including Wallenberg Investments, EQT, Nordea, SEB, Nasdaq Nordic, Ericsson, Nokia, Saab, Ørsted and the Novo Nordisk Foundation. Its Capital Markets Track, chaired by Christian Clausen, BlackRock’s Nordic chair, says the work remains exploratory and no specific initiative has been agreed upon yet.

Who Is Steering the Discussion

The steering group is led by former Finnish prime minister Jyrki Katainen and includes Christian Clausen as the capital-markets lead. Major participants also feature the investment firm EQT, the banking group Nordea, the lender SEB, and the Novo Nordisk Foundation. Nasdaq operates most of the region’s exchanges, while Euronext owns Oslo Børs after its 2019 acquisition.

Expected Benefits and Structural Hurdles

Proponents argue that a single market would pool the region’s roughly $4 trillion (€3.43 tn) of pension-fund and sovereign-investor assets and the $175 billion (€3.43 tn) of annual inflows, creating deeper liquidity, attracting more IPOs and reducing the incentive for Nordic firms to list in the United States.

The primary obstacles are ownership and regulation. Nasdaq runs the exchanges in Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki and Reykjavik, whereas Euronext controls Oslo Børs; any merger would have to reconcile these separate owners. Additionally, despite shared membership in the European Economic Area, the four countries retain distinct financial-regulation regimes, which the alliance has identified as a critical prerequisite for unification.

Official Reactions

The exchange highlighted its own multi-country structure as a template for deeper liquidity, shared technology and harmonised rules. Nasdaq declined to comment when approached for a statement.

Upcoming Summit and Outlook

Nordic Compass plans to present its first capital-markets proposals at a summit in Gothenburg on 5 November. The meeting will reveal whether the exploratory analysis has progressed to concrete measures, and it will set the tone for any future steps toward a unified Nordic exchange.
