Marks & Spencer Revives 1980s Chocolate Classics Amid Rising Artisan Interest

Revival of Retro Confections

Marks & Spencer has re-released a selection of 1980s-era chocolate products in their original packaging, including the “Now!”, “Jet”, “Sparks” and “Coconut Grove” lines. The move targets consumers who recall those brands from their youth and are seeking nostalgic treats alongside contemporary offerings.

Tasting Impressions and Product Range

Food writer Annalisa Barbieri sampled the newly launched Scoff chocolates, which are produced in small batches throughout the year. The latest batch featured nine distinct flavours ranging from lemon to malted milk, all of which she described as “beautifully fresh tasting.” She noted that the ingredient list is extensive and leans toward mainstream profiles, suggesting that a cleaner, more artisan formulation could enhance the brand’s appeal.

Barbieri also compared the Scoff line with her regular high-cocoa selections, highlighting Willie’s 100% Cacao varieties that incorporate pistachio, date, raisin or hazelnut. While she typically avoids 100 % cacao products—citing a common perception of bitterness—she praised Willie’s for delivering a balanced dark chocolate experience where the added fruit sweetness is noticeable. Firetree 100% cacao was mentioned as an exception to the generally harsh flavour of pure cacao bars.

Market Context: Nostalgia Meets High-Cocoa Demand

The re-introduction of retro chocolates aligns with a broader consumer shift toward high-cocoa, artisanal, and limited-edition confectionery. Barbieri’s commentary reflects a growing preference for products that combine nostalgic branding with premium ingredients, a trend that retailers are leveraging to differentiate shelf space and attract both older shoppers and younger enthusiasts seeking “cleaner” chocolate experiences.

Upcoming Showcase at Aldeburgh Food & Drink Fair

Barbieri notes that the Aldeburgh Food and Drink Fair, scheduled for 26 and 27 September in Suffolk, will feature a variety of chocolate makers, providing an opportunity for consumers to sample both the revived Marks & Spencer classics and independent high-cocoa offerings. The event is positioned as a focal point for exploring current chocolate trends and tasting innovations.
