Historical Context

On 11 March 2009, 17-year-old Tim Kretschmer opened fire at Albertville-Realschule in Winnenden, killing 15 victims (nine students, three teachers and others) before committing suicide, the deadliest German school attack since the 2002 Erfurt massacre. The 2024 Gosen-Neu Zittau stabbing, in which a 19-year-old killed two students and a civilian, revived the Winnenden trauma and prompted Chancellor Olaf Scholz to call for tighter weapon checks and expanded mental-health measures.
