History

Historical Context

In 1940, after the Évian Conference, Dominican dictator Rafael Trujillo signed a 30 January agreement with the Dominican Republic Settlement Association, allowing roughly 800 Jewish refugees to found the agricultural colony of Sosúa. Descendants preserved a synagogue and museum; in August 2026 President Luis Abinader allocated RD$50 million to expand the museum, reviving the WWII-era refuge legacy.
