Schools must set aside a minimum of nine discretionary weeks when no athletic activities may occur. The revised preseason schedule reduces practice days from 31 to 27, while the added regular-season week creates an extra bye week for every program.
Transfer Portal and Timing Implications
If the changes are approved, the January transfer portal window would shrink from 15 days to 10 days, opening on the first business day after the new calendar’s Jan. 1 start. The elimination of the spring portal window this year already limited player movement; the shortened window would further reduce the time athletes have to enter the market.
