Expanded Reporting Requirements
The Big Ten Conference announced that, beginning with the 2026 season, each member school must submit four player-availability reports per week for games against conference opponents. Reports are due three days, two days, and one day before kickoff, with a final submission two hours prior to the start of the contest. Mid-week reports classify athletes as Probable, Questionable, Doubtful, Out, or Out (first half). The gameday report adds the categories Game-Time Decision, Out, and Out (first half). Any student-athlete not listed on a report is automatically considered available.
How the New Process Works
- Frequency: Four reports weekly replace the single weekly report previously required.
- Timing: For a Saturday game, reports are due by 8 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, with the final report due two hours before kickoff on Saturday.
- Scope: Only games versus conference opponents are covered. Visiting teams must report the status of players who traveled with the squad or who regularly participate in the two-deep on offense, defense, or special teams.
- Publication: All reports will be posted on the conference’s official website, BigTen.org.
Context and Prior Policy
The conference first instituted player-availability reporting in 2023, requiring a single weekly submission. The 2026 expansion builds on that framework, aiming to provide more timely information to fans, media, and opposing teams. The first set of reports for the season will be released ahead of the early-season matchups between USC and Rutgers and between Purdue and UCLA, scheduled for September.
Anticipated Impact
Conference officials say the increased reporting frequency will improve transparency for stakeholders and help manage travel-party limitations by clarifying which athletes are expected to participate. By offering near-real-time status updates, the policy is intended to enhance game-day preparation for coaches and reduce uncertainty for broadcasters and fans. The 2026 campaign also begins with USC hosting San Jose State, marking the first implementation of the new system.
