Historical Context

On 18 April 1988, the United States launched Operation Praying Mantis after the Iranian-mined USS Samuel B. Roberts, destroying two oil platforms, two frigates and other vessels. Ordered by President Ronald Reagan and under Supreme Leader Ruhollah Khomeini, it was the largest U.S. surface fight since World War II. The strike helped force the 1988 cease-fire ending the Iran-Iraq War and still influences U.S. carrier presence in the Persian Gulf.
