Fatal Crossing in the Channel
A boat carrying more than 110 people was monitored overnight by a French rescue vessel in the Gravelines area. When the vessel reached the migrants, one individual required CPR and was later pronounced dead after a rescue helicopter was dispatched. The incident follows a decline in Channel crossings this year. Government figures place the cumulative total at roughly 16,500 migrants, more than 40 % lower than the same point last year when over 41,000 people had arrived by the end of 2025. An independent analysis reported 16,391 crossings so far, a 43 % drop from the previous year and a 17 % decline from the same point in 2024. The latest arrivals are the first seven boats to reach the UK since August 17, when 250 people crossed.
The Home Office recorded 86,000 asylum claims in the 12 months to June 2026, a 21 % decrease from the prior year, and noted that around 90 % of illegal entries are made by small-boat migrants. In June, 16,000 asylum seekers were housed in Home Office hotels, down 50 % from a year earlier, as the government continues to close hotels and move occupants to larger sites such as former military barracks and multiple-occupancy homes.
