Bessent Bans UAE
- On August 28, 2026, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced banning U.S. banks from transacting with UAE branch of Egypt’s Banque Misr.
- Bessent said Treasury will buy back $4 billion of bonds, warning the program may spark dollar volatility threatening Asian economies.
- The Treasury reported the UAE branch moved $1.8 billion through 103 front companies from Jan 2024-June 2026.
- Brookings economist Robin Brooks warned Japan’s yield-cap failure suggests U.S. bond buybacks may be ineffective.
