On August 22, a head-on collision on the A66 near Middlesbrough killed Police Constable Matthew Blades, 37, and Police Constable Tom Clough, 38. Their police vehicle was struck by a Volkswagen Passat travelling the wrong way. Five occupants of the Passat also died, bringing the total death toll to seven.

Police have arrested 17 people, aged 19 to 61, on suspicion of organised-crime involvement, firearms possession, drug offences, assisting offenders and threats to kill. Two of the first-arrested individuals have already appeared in court.
