Legal Battle Over Kennedy Center Naming Escalates Amid Demolition Threat

Rep. Joyce Beatty (D-Ohio), an ex officio board member, is leading a court challenge to the Kennedy Center’s plan to add President Donald J. Trump’s name to the complex. Beatty argues that the board’s proposals—an inscription reading “Restored and Renovated by President Donald Trump,” a future inscription once a $100 million endowment is reached, and the renaming of the site as “President Donald J. Trump Plaza”—violate a U.S. District Court order that only Congress may alter the center’s name. The Justice Department has warned that, if the administration cannot proceed with a two-year renovation, the building could eventually have to be “taken down.” Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the renovation is expected to cost $257 million.

The dispute traces back to December 2025, when the board first rebranded the venue as the “Trump Kennedy Center” and placed “The Donald J. Trump and” above the Kennedy Center’s official title on the front façade. A federal judge later ordered the removal of that designation, and the board covered the altered façade with a tarp in June. The board voted earlier this month to move forward with the new inscription and to rename the grounds, prompting Beatty’s legal team to file another challenge. A hearing on the latest filing is scheduled for Thursday.
