On August 30, 2026, a chain-reaction collision involving four vehicles occurred on Highway 2 near Atlit, south of Haifa. A woman in her 50s was trapped in a crushed vehicle, suffered severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene by Magen David Adom (MDA) paramedics. Six other occupants were injured; a man in his 60s was seriously hurt after being extricated from an overturned vehicle, while five additional passengers sustained minor injuries. The crash created a multi-kilometer traffic jam north of the Zichron Ya’acov Interchange before police closed the road and diverted traffic to Route 4.

The same weekend saw three other deadly crashes. On Route 854 near Lapidot, two men in their 30s were killed and a third man in his 30s was seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision. A foreign worker in her 40s died after a hit-and-run while riding an all-terrain vehicle near Tzochar in the Eshkol Regional Council; she was pronounced dead at Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba. Additionally, a 93-year-old man was killed in a three-vehicle collision on Route 4 near Ra’anana Junction.

Police from the Coastal District opened an investigation into the Highway 2 pile-up, deploying traffic accident investigators to the scene.
