Russia’s Accelerated Use of Jet-Powered Shahed Drones and Ukraine’s Counter-Drone Push

Presidential defence-technology adviser Serhii “Flash” Beskrestnov reported that Russia launched roughly 1,500 jet-powered Shahed-type drones in July and more than 2,500 in August—a rise of at least 67 percent in a single month. The drones are being deployed “practically straight from the factory,” indicating no large reserve stockpile. Beskrestnov also noted a distinctive flight pattern: hundreds of the UAVs skirt the Belarusian border before heading toward Kyiv, a route he believes allows the drones’ LTE modems to connect to Belarusian mobile-network base stations.

In response, Ukraine’s new defence minister Yevhen Khmara announced that four interceptor drone designs have already undergone field testing and are being refined for mass production. Ukraine is also evaluating additional interceptor concepts to match the higher speeds of the jet-powered Shaheds, which can exceed 600 km/h—more than three times faster than earlier piston-driven variants.
