An ice-and-rock mass entered the upper Bhote Koshi River, triggering catastrophic flooding along Nepal’s border with China. The surge devastated downstream communities on the Trishuli River, destroying homes, roads, bridges and energy infrastructure. Three days after the waters began rising, a video circulated showing rescuers pulling a six-year-old girl alive from mud and debris.
Scale of Human Impact
National authorities report that the death toll has risen to 734, with roughly 2,500 people still missing. The missing include 589 foreign nationals, 933 hydropower-project employees and 85 security personnel; 242 people have been injured. The worst-hit districts are Chitwan (259 deaths), Nawalparasi East (184 deaths) and Nawalparasi West (82 deaths). Identification of bodies is ongoing at 21 hospitals nationwide.
Rescue Operations and Aid
Nearly 20,000 security personnel have been mobilised for search-and-rescue work, employing helicopters and ground teams. Officials say 8,186 individuals have been rescued so far, among them 279 trapped in a hydropower tunnel and 227 foreign nationals. The government has earmarked more than one billion Nepalese rupees (over $6.5 million) for relief, dispatched dozens of trucks with supplies, and arranged air deliveries of food to isolated communities.
Cross-Border Effects
On the Chinese side of the border, authorities in Tibet’s Gyirong County report 16 deaths and 546 missing, including 261 foreign nationals from 23 countries. The Russian Embassy in China confirmed eight Russian citizens were missing in the disaster zone; Nepal’s tourism board later listed nine Russian nationals as missing, with two rescued and seven still unaccounted for.
Ongoing Challenges
Both Nepalese and Chinese officials warn that unstable terrain and a newly formed barrier lake pose continuing risks to rescue crews and survivors. Search-and-rescue efforts remain active, and the identification of victims is still in progress across the affected districts.
