History

Historical Context

After the British Mandate ended with Iraq’s independence in 1932, Baghdad grew into a regional hub, hosting the 1960 OPEC founding conference and witnessing the 1958 revolution that ended the monarchy. In this Cold-War climate, Turkey, Pakistan, Iran, Iraq and the United Kingdom signed the anti-communist Baghdad Pact in 1955, backed by $30 million of U.S. military aid and a joint command in Ankara.
