Research Method and Performance

The team anesthetized each cockroach, implanted electrodes to stimulate the nervous system, and attached a backpack containing a syringe cylinder and a camera. One “observer” cockroach located targets, while a second carried the drug payload. Laboratory tests using silicone targets and pig skin showed a 100 % success rate in reaching designated checkpoints. Overall drug-delivery succeeded in 72 % of attempts, rising to as high as 95 % when the injection was launched from within 15 cm of the target.

Potential Applications and Limitations

Researchers envision swarms of these insects forming a network that can rapidly locate and treat trapped individuals deep within collapsed structures. However, the study notes several hurdles before field deployment: navigating complex terrain, maintaining reliable signal transmission through rubble, and ensuring injection safety for both victims and operators. Further testing in realistic disaster environments will be required to address these challenges.
