Incident Overview

On August 19, police were called to a stabbing at a Taco Bell on Riverside Walk in Rochdale at approximately 6 p.m. A 13-year-old boy was seriously injured and taken to hospital. Two teenage males were later arrested on suspicion of assault and possession of a bladed article. The restaurant was evacuated and remains closed while enquiries continue.

Police Response and Temporary Powers

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) activated a Section 60 and Section 60AA authorisation at 15:00 BST on Sunday, granting officers temporary stop-and-search powers in the town centre until 15:00 BST on Monday. The powers allow officers to stop and search individuals in the designated area and to require removal of items worn primarily to conceal identity. Additional officers were deployed to patrol the area, and the venue was cordoned off.

Investigation Progress

He said a team of experienced detectives is working “around the clock” to piece together the full story, reviewing CCTV footage, gathering witness statements, and analysing intelligence.

Witness Account

Restaurant patron David Lane recounted the events to the Manchester Evening News. He and his family were dining at the venue around 5:50 p.m. when a group of youths entered and began fighting. Lane asked a crew member to remove the group, then heard “crying and screaming” as the stabbing occurred. He applied pressure to the wound with napkins, noting the boy had lost a lot of blood, and believes his actions prevented a fatal outcome.
