Pentagon Assessment Leak Sparks Debate Over U.S. Readiness in Iran War

A classified Secretary of Defense Orders Book (SDOB) dated August 14 revealed senior Army, Navy and Air Force leaders warning that the six-month Iran conflict is straining U.S. forces across multiple commands. Chief Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell denounced the publication, calling it “a crime” and “a betrayal of the force.” He emphasized that force-allocation decisions are based on the President’s strategic priorities and advice from the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and that the Department does not discuss internal risk assessments publicly.

The SDOB cited formal non-concurs from European, Pacific and Southern Commands, noting that diverted ships, surveillance aircraft and personnel are degrading homeland-defense capabilities. Navy Admiral Daryl Caudle warned that only about one-fourth of the destroyer fleet remains ready to deploy, a sharp drop from pre-war levels. In late July, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told senators the war has cost an estimated $37.5 billion since February, covering current spending and projected needs through September 30.

Reports indicate the U.S. Army has exhausted “virtually all” of its Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) and Precision Strike Missiles (PrSM). The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) said the Pentagon entered the conflict with roughly 2,330 Patriot interceptors; that figure fell to 759 by July 27. The same institute noted the U.S. had 452 THAAD interceptors before the war and 234 remained by the end of July. The Payne Institute for Public Policy estimates that the United States, Israel and allied forces used nearly 11,300 munitions in the first 16 days of the war beginning February 28. Congress is reviewing an $88 billion supplemental request and a Pentagon budget exceeding $200 billion for the Iran operation.
