Historical Context

After the 1905 dissolution of the Sweden-Norway union, the Storting elected Prince Carl of Denmark—who took the name Haakon VII—and he took his constitutional oath on 27 November 1905; his coronation followed on 22 June 1906. The 1908 amendment removed the coronation requirement, leaving only a parliamentary accession oath. On 1 September 2026, Haakon VIII repeated that oath, echoing the 1905 precedent.
