Rep. John James Casts Michigan Elections as “Ground Zero” in Fight Against Socialism

Republican Representative John James, a candidate for Michigan governor, told CBS News’s Margaret Brennan on “Face the Nation” that the upcoming state elections are “ground zero for this republic.” He warned that “we need to make sure that we stop socialism and that we save the state of Michigan, because if we don’t do it here, it’s going to go to the rest of the country.” James linked the rhetoric to comments made in 2019 by left-wing Twitch streamer Hasan Piker, who said “America deserved 9/11,” and suggested that some Democratic candidates are campaigning with extremists.

The remarks come as progressive insurgents have achieved notable success in recent Democratic primaries. Abdul El-Sayed, a former Detroit mayoral candidate who ran for the U.S. Senate, advanced in the primary and has advocated for policies such as abolishing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and implementing Medicare for All. Although El-Sayed has denied being a socialist, his platform reflects a shift toward more left-leaning proposals within the state Democratic Party.

James’s warning was framed as a defensive stance against what he characterizes as a spread of socialist ideas. In response, El-Sayed clarified that he has “no plans” to campaign with Piker and distanced himself from the streamer’s controversial remarks about American Jews and Israel. El-Sayed reiterated that he does not identify as a socialist, emphasizing his focus on progressive policy goals rather than ideological labels.
