Historical Context

In July 2009 Iceland’s parliament (Althing) approved an EU membership application by 33-28 votes, launching formal talks that began in July 2010. The government suspended negotiations in September 2013 and never formally withdrew the application, keeping it dormant until a 2024 coalition revived the issue. On 29 August 2026 a referendum led by Prime Minister Kristrún Frostadóttir and President António Costa rejected resuming accession talks.
