In July 1991 President George H. W. Bush nominated Judge Clarence Thomas, a one-year D.C. Circuit judge, to replace retiring civil-rights icon Justice Thurgood Marshall. After Anita Hill’s sexual-harassment allegations sparked reopened hearings, the Senate confirmed Thomas on October 15, 1991 by a 52-48 vote—41 Republicans and 11 Democrats in favor—marking one of the few confirmations with an opposition-party Senate and ushering the partisan confirmation battles seen today.
