Recovery of 61 Bitcoin After 12 Years

In May 2026, a UK resident identified only as Chris received all 61 BTC that had been locked on the defunct Intersango exchange. The settlement on May 28 released the coins, which were then valued at roughly £3.33 million (about $4.4 million). The recovery turned a 2011 purchase of about £2.94 per coin into a multi-million-pound fortune.

Background and Intersango Collapse

Chris bought Bitcoin through Intersango (originally Britcoin) in 2011, spending roughly £1,500. The exchange began winding down in late 2012 and ceased operating by early 2014, leaving users unable to withdraw funds. At the time his account was frozen, the 61 BTC were worth about £4,000. Intersango was dissolved in the UK in 2016, and its former owners were unresponsive to recovery attempts.

Legal Process and Settlement

In January 2026, Chris instructed CEL Solicitors, a firm that handles cryptocurrency recovery, to pursue the claim. The firm’s head of financial disputes, Ryan Sweetnam, noted that proving ownership after fifteen years required extensive documentation, including bank records from the period of purchase. After negotiations that involved U.S. courts, the parties reached a settlement on May 28, resulting in the full return of the 61 BTC. Sweetnam also indicated that more than 5,500 BTC linked to former Intersango clients may still be recoverable, potentially worth hundreds of millions of pounds.

Financial Outcome and Plans

Following the settlement, Chris intends to sell a portion of the recovered Bitcoin to fund the purchase of a larger home that can accommodate his mother-in-law. He plans to retain the remainder as a crypto investment, while monitoring the assets daily.

Potential Implications for Other Former Users

The case demonstrates that, despite the collapse of early exchanges, legal avenues can still succeed in reclaiming dormant cryptocurrency assets. CEL Solicitors suggests that other former Intersango customers might pursue similar verification processes, though each claim will depend on the availability of historic transaction records and the willingness of counterparties to negotiate.
