Earlier, on August 21 the outlet highlighted a proposed “hyperscale” facility in Havering, east London, estimating its carbon footprint at roughly one million tonnes of CO2. Both analyses underscore the potential for future datacentres to become major sources of greenhouse-gas emissions and water consumption, especially amid ongoing drought conditions.

Why the Issue Matters

Datacentres underpin the storage and transmission of digital communications, a service that has expanded dramatically as businesses and consumers rely on cloud computing, streaming, and artificial intelligence. The Guardian notes that much of the data traffic consists of low-value or redundant information—such as routine “thank-you” emails—contributing unnecessarily to energy use. Reducing such junk traffic could cut UK emissions by more than 16,000 tonnes of CO2 each year.
