Historical Context

After HSBC’s 2007 profit warning, the UK saw its first bank run in 150 years when Northern Rock sought emergency funding and Treasury Chancellor Alistair Darling guaranteed deposits in September 2007. Between 2007-2009 the government injected £137 billion, including a £50 billion recapitalisation that took stakes in RBS, Lloyds and others.
