Michael Hussey Chooses Australia Over England Test Coaching Role

Former Australian batsman Michael Hussey has turned down the opportunity to become England’s full-time Test batting coach. After discussions last month with England’s new Test head coach Stephen Fleming, Hussey opted for a part-time consultancy with Cricket Australia. The arrangement allows him to maintain existing commitments, including coaching in the Hundred, other franchise tournaments, and commentary work for Fox Sports in Australia.

Hussey, 51, led Welsh Fire in the Hundred earlier this year and previously served as a batting coach for the Chennai Super Kings in the Indian Premier League. He also acted as a part-time consultant for England during their 2022 T20 World Cup triumph. The proposed England role would have required a full-time commitment throughout a winter featuring tours of South Africa, Bangladesh and Australia before the home Ashes series next summer.

Hussey’s decision leaves England’s search for a permanent Test batting coach unresolved. The England and Wales Cricket Board may retain Marcus Trescothick, who has performed well in a caretaker capacity during the current Test series against Pakistan, or appoint a new head of batting coaching across all development teams. For Australia, Hussey’s consultancy is expected to bolster Pat Cummins’ side ahead of the Ashes next year, while giving him the flexibility to balance coaching duties with his other roles.
