Fatal Shootout in Overasselt Triggers Massive Arrest Sweep

In the early hours of Tuesday, a heavily armed group in balaclavas entered a house in Overasselt, a village near the German border, and opened fire. The exchange left a 51-year-old security guard dead and wounded two police officers who responded to the scene. Police spokesperson Jolanda Aalbers said officers were hit but their injuries were not life-threatening.

Local media linked the violence to the network of Dutch drug lord Jos Leijdekkers—known as “Bolle Jos”—who has a history of international cocaine trafficking. The Het Parool newspaper reported that the clash stemmed from a dispute over several hundred kilograms of cocaine allegedly moved by Leijdekkers’ gang. Prosecutor Monique Vinkesteijn noted a similar shooting at the same house last year, describing it as part of a “longstanding conflict.”

Police announced the detention of 34 suspects of Dutch, French, Belgian and Algerian nationality. The detainees face charges ranging from murder and manslaughter to preparing a kidnapping, according to the prosecutor. Officers also recovered multiple firearms, data-storage devices and several vehicles.
