  • On 2 September 1946 the newly elected Constituent Assembly created the Interim Government of India, led by Jawaharlal Nehru, to manage the transfer of power from British rule. The provisional cabinet oversaw political negotiations, communal tensions, and administrative duties until independence on 15 August 1947, when India and Pakistan became sovereign dominions.
