China has demonstrated two-way laser communication between Earth and the Moon, becoming the second nation after the United States to achieve the capability. The experiment used ground telescopes in Yunnan province and an experimental satellite that entered lunar orbit following a launch mishap in 2024. The Chinese Academy of Sciences, which led the project, reported a downlink speed of 100 megabits per second and an uplink speed of 1.25 Mbps.

Technical Performance Compared to NASA’s 2013 Test

NASA’s 2013 lunar laser communications demonstration recorded download speeds of 622 Mbps and upload speeds of 20 Mbps—approximately six times faster for downloads and sixteen times faster for uploads than China’s 2024 figures. The disparity has prompted questions among space experts about the factors influencing the lower data rates achieved by the Chinese system.

Expert Perspectives

Jonathan McDowell, a London-based space historian and former Harvard astronomer, described the Chinese and U.S. Yang Lei, a deep-space laser communications specialist and head of the Chinese research team, emphasized the inherent speed advantage of laser links over traditional radio methods in an interview with state news agency Xinhua.

Implications for Future Missions

The successful two-way link confirms that laser communication can function over the Earth-Moon distance, offering higher bandwidth than conventional radio links. While current data rates fall short of the benchmark set by NASA’s earlier test, the technology’s demonstrated feasibility may inform the design of future deep-space communication architectures, pending improvements that close the performance gap.
