Court Approves Gradual Reunification for Off-Grid Family in Italy

The juvenile court of L’Aquila has approved a staged process that could allow the three children of British father Nathan Trevallion and Australian mother Catherine Birmingham to leave the residential care facility where they have lived since November. Under the plan, the children may return to a home environment for daytime visits immediately, with weekend overnight stays permitted from October. The court’s ruling partially revises earlier decisions and sets out a gradual reunification pathway, subject to monitoring by social services.

The family’s remote woodland home in the Abruzzo region attracted national attention after Italian authorities inspected the property following a mushroom-poisoning incident that sent all five family members to hospital. On November 20 the court suspended the couple’s parental responsibility, and the children—a nine-year-old girl and twin boys aged seven—were placed in a residential care facility. Mother Birmingham remained with the children until March, when a new court order required her to leave based on social-services recommendations.

Lawyer Simone Pillon explained that the new ruling “partially revises previous court decisions” and creates a supervised, incremental reunification schedule. Pillon added that the family intends to appeal the decision in order to pursue a faster and more complete reunification. Social services will continue to assess the children’s reintegration before any permanent return to the family home is authorized.
