Potential Cognitive Impacts

The interviews suggested that frequent reliance on the AI tool eroded users’ sense of self-trust, prompting them to seek validation for even simple decisions such as word choice in emails. The ease of obtaining quick answers lowered intrinsic motivation to learn, making the learning process feel less rewarding. Some participants also noted that they substituted peer discussion with interaction with the chatbot, which they felt contributed to feelings of social isolation and reduced interpersonal skills.

Constructive Uses Reported

A subset of participants treated ChatGPT as a collaborative partner rather than a replacement for their own thinking. By delegating routine tasks—such as data structuring or summarizing dense texts—to the model, they reported freeing mental energy for higher-order reasoning, experiencing increased confidence and reduced anxiety when tackling challenging assignments. In these cases, the AI output served as a springboard for original ideas rather than a finished product.

Limitations and Future Directions

The study’s qualitative nature, small sample size and focus on a single demographic limit the ability to generalize findings to older populations or different cultural contexts. Moreover, the research captures a snapshot in time; it remains unclear whether observed habits persist with longer-term use. Farhat recommends future investigations with larger, more diverse cohorts and longitudinal designs to determine whether the identified cognitive and social effects endure or evolve, and to explore training strategies that promote adaptive rather than dependent AI usage.
