The alleged attack occurred on 8 March at the Fairway, Huyton, after the two had been drinking together at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club. Lynch was reported to have suffered serious injuries to his eye.

Barton appeared in court on his birthday, dressed in a navy-blue suit, tie and shirt, and gave a thumbs-up gesture to a man in the public gallery before being remanded in custody. He remains detained pending a bail-application hearing scheduled for the following Monday.
