On 4 November 1979 Iranian students seized the U.S. embassy in Tehran, holding 52 diplomats for 444 days until 20 January 1981; President Jimmy Carter’s failed Operation Eagle Claw in April 1980, which killed eight U.S. servicemen, cemented lasting U.S.–Iran hostility.
