New Fund Targets Public-Space Safety
The Mayor of London, Sir Sadiq Khan, has launched a “first-ever new fund” that will allow local authorities to apply for a share of £15.6 million. Community research teams will consult women and girls across the capital to audit public places and recommend improvements such as additional CCTV and better lighting. The scheme builds on a 2024 pilot in which the mayor’s office and Transport for London gathered safety concerns from women and girls in five boroughs to inform future design.
Funding Package Expands to £37 million Across Multiple Initiatives
The £15.6 million allocation is part of a broader investment of more than £37 million aimed at tackling violence against women and girls (VAWG). The package includes a previously announced £1 million program to support boys and young men at risk of being influenced by misogynistic online communities, £6 million to address technology-enabled abuse, another £6 million to provide legal advice, counselling and other support services for VAWG victims, and £2.4 million dedicated to combating child sexual exploitation and grooming gangs.
Official Statements & Responses
London’s victims’ commissioner, Andrea Simon, praised the “holistic and ambitious vision” and highlighted the importance of specialist support for survivors and preventative work against misogynistic attitudes.
Verbatim Quote
