Ten days after the catastrophic floods that struck Nepal on Aug. 26, rescuers pulled a Chinese national and a woman alive from separate sites. The Chinese man was recovered from a 225-meter tunnel at the Trishuli 3A hydropower plant, while the woman was rescued from a mud-filled house in the flood-hit town of Nuwakot. Both survivors were airlifted to Kathmandu for medical evaluation.
Scope of the Disaster
The disaster management agency estimates that the floods caused at least 1,300 deaths and left more than 5,000 people missing. Roughly 900 workers remain unaccounted for across 12 hydropower projects, with about 500 believed trapped in various tunnels. The Trishuli hydropower complex alone accounted for three workers rescued alive, including the Chinese national.

The Nepalese army confirmed that a joint rescue team—comprising Nepalese military personnel and South Korean disaster experts—conducted the tunnel extraction. A social-media post from the prime minister’s office announced the Chinese worker’s rescue, and army spokespeople reported the woman’s evacuation, noting she received bottled water and a blanket before being flown out. Images released by China’s state broadcaster CCTV showed rescuers carrying the Chinese survivor from the tunnel, while Nepalese army footage captured the woman covered in mud during her rescue.

Authorities continue to search for missing workers and residents, focusing on the numerous tunnels that remain hazardous. The army’s medical teams are assessing the health of rescued individuals, and additional air-lift capabilities are being positioned to reach isolated sites.
